How the 2026 Group Draw Works
The 2026 World Cup group draw places 48 teams into 12 groups of 4. Teams are sorted into 4 pots of 12 based on FIFA World Rankings at the time of the draw. Pot 1 contains the top 12 ranked teams plus automatic inclusion for host nations (USA, Canada, Mexico) regardless of ranking. CONMEBOL, UEFA and other confederations have protections to prevent teams from the same confederation meeting in the group stage (except UEFA teams which can face each other).
Pot 1 Likely Members
Brazil, France, England, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Croatia and a rotating team based on rankings. The USA, Canada and Mexico are protected as hosts, potentially bumping lower-ranked teams from Pot 1.
Confederation Rules
No two CONMEBOL teams can be drawn in the same group. UEFA teams can face each other but are limited to a maximum of 2 per group. AFC teams are spread to avoid facing each other in groups. CAF teams similarly spread.
Dream Draws and Nightmare Scenarios
Every nation has an ideal draw — a beatable path through the group stage that sets up a winnable knockout bracket. The 48-team format creates more opportunity but also more unpredictability.
England's Dream Group
England want to avoid France or Brazil in the group stage. A group containing a CAF team, an AFC team and a lower-ranked CONMEBOL team would be ideal — theoretically 6-9 points secured before the knockouts begin.
The Nightmare: Two Giants Together
In 2022, Germany and Spain were drawn in the same group — producing one of the tournament's great group-stage matches (1-1). In 2026 with 12 groups and Pot 1 protections, this should be rarer, but still possible if seedings shift.
When Is the 2026 World Cup Draw?
The official draw date for the 2026 World Cup group stage has not been confirmed at time of writing — draws typically occur 6-8 months before the tournament begins. Based on the June 11, 2026 opening date, a draw in October or November 2025 is expected.
How to Watch the Draw
FIFA typically broadcasts the draw live on FIFA.com, YouTube and through broadcast partners. Previous draws have taken place in major cities (Moscow 2017, Doha 2022). The 2026 draw may be held in Miami or New York.
Post-Draw Analysis
Once the draw is made, tournament simulation models immediately calculate each team's probability of advancing. Historical data suggests Pot 1 teams have an 87% chance of advancing from the group stage.
